Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Wednesday outlined the far-reaching impact of India's growing semiconductor ecosystem, mentioning its potential to drive exponential growth across key sectors such as automobiles, medical devices, industrial transport, and consumer electronics.
Addressing a diverse audience that included industry leaders, government representatives, and academia at SEMICON India 2024, Vaishnaw noted that semiconductor chips are the cornerstone of modern technology and power essential industries including healthcare, transportation, and electronics, making them integral to India’s economic ambitions.
“The scale of electronics and mobile manufacturing is expanding rapidly in our country, and establishing semiconductor units will drive exponential growth in the automobile, medical, industrial transport, and consumer electronics sectors,” he said.
He announced the approval of five semiconductor units, with construction already progressing rapidly, and noted the speed with which permissions were granted, setting new global benchmarks for efficiency.
The minister also placed a strong emphasis on talent development, revealing plans to train 85,000 engineers and technicians over the next decade. This effort is being supported by 113 universities and institutions across India.
