Amazon Web Services (AWS) has named Sandeep Dutta as its new president for India and South Asia, filling the leadership role nearly a year after Vaishali Kasture stepped down as interim country head.
The appointment was announced on 4 November by Jaime Valles, AWS Vice President for Asia Pacific & Japan (APJ), who had been overseeing India operations following Kasture's departure. Dutta brings more than two decades of experience from Accenture India, where he led significant business transformations and became known as a thought leader in the technology sector.
In a statement, Valles described Dutta as someone with deep insight into India’s unique challenges and opportunities, noting that Dutta’s strategic vision has been instrumental in enabling organisations to leverage digital innovation for transformative change.
Dutta takes on the role at a critical juncture, as AWS pursues a major USD 12.7 billion investment plan in India, extending through 2030. The plan includes building extensive data centre infrastructure, which is expected to drive USD 23.3 billion in economic contributions to India's GDP and create over 1,31,700 full-time jobs each year. When AWS first announced this commitment, Puneet Chandok led the company’s India and South Asia operations before joining Microsoft. Valles shared that AWS's cloud infrastructure investments have already contributed Rs 30,900 crore (USD 3.7 billion) to India's GDP and supported more than 39,500 jobs, highlighting the company’s ongoing economic impact in the region.
AWS is also reinforcing its commitment to sustainability as it grows in India. Valles said AWS’s investment in 50 renewable energy projects across the country, set to provide over 1.1 gigawatts of clean energy. These projects will supply AWS’s operational needs while aligning with India’s ambitious green energy objectives. With Dutta at the helm, AWS aims to advance both digital and sustainable transformation in India, supporting customers and contributing to the nation's broader goals.
