AM/NS India, a joint venture between global steel giants Arcelor Mittal and Nippon Steel, is preparing to set up one of India’s largest greenfield steel projects with a significant investment of Rs 1.4 lakh crore. The integrated steel plant, planned in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district, will have a total capacity of 17.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), according to media reports.
The project, which will unfold in two phases, starts with an initial Rs 80,000 crore investment to establish a 7.3 MTPA capacity plant on a 2,600-acre site. This will be followed by a second phase, which will add 10.5 MTPA capacity with an additional Rs 60,000 crore and another 2,000 acres. The comprehensive agreement for the project was finalised in a virtual meeting between Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh and ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal.
Aiming to incorporate green steel technology, the plant will focus on high-value sectors like the automotive industry, helping reduce India's reliance on steel imports. Key factors such as land availability and access to the Nakkapalli port, located near the Nakkapalli bulk drug park, were critical in the site selection process. Additionally, AM/NS India is seeking approval for a dedicated jetty, which would facilitate the import of raw materials from global suppliers.
Scheduled to break ground in January 2025, this project aligns with AM/NS India’s ambitious goal to reach a production capacity of 40 MTPA by 2035, marking a significant milestone in India’s steel industry.
