A report revealed that India experienced a significant surge in cyber threats during the Q1 2024, with nearly a quarter of users facing web-borne attacks. About 22.9 per cent of Indian web users were attacked by web-based threats, while 20.1 per cent encountered local threats from January to March.
During this period, web threats predominantly exploited vulnerabilities in browsers and their plugins, allowing attackers to compromise user systems when infected websites were visited, often without the users’ awareness.
File-less malware, a particularly insidious type of threat, emerged as a major concern due to its ability to avoid detection by leaving no trace for static analysis. Social engineering tactics such as phishing, baiting, and pretexting also remained widespread, further endangering users.
“Malware remains a major threat to the users in India. Targeted malware attacks continue to be a major source of worry for organisations and users alike. Stealth threats and the exploitation of user vulnerabilities are seen to plague the systems of the users in India,” said Purshottam Bhatia, Head of Sales, Consumer Solutions, South Asia, Kaspersky.
