The only constant thing in the world is change. There was a time when the newspaper/written form of content used to be the only source of information for people. Then came the radio and then our beloved Television. Today we have mobiles that have surpassed every other medium of information and are single handedly dictating our choices. When we want any information we just ‘Google’ it on our phones and laptops. However, after almost 25 years google has finally found its worthy nemesis in Chat GPT or it seems so for now.
Chat GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a chatbot launched by OpenAI. It is a language generation model that can generate text for a query in an eloquent way. As of now, Chat GPT does not produce any visuals, online services, or any other type of content except written, however, one may argue that nothing is stopping this new technology from evolving. Since its launch in November 2022, it has become viral and found its audience with over a million people subscribing to it.
“I believe that we are in the middle of something big, almost at the cusp of technology change. Chat GPT has surely ruffled some feathers but it is time to wait and watch whether it can take over google as the primary search engine and evolves further.” Shares Partho Dasgupta, Ex-CEO of BARC India and Presently Managing Partner, Thoth Advisors.
According to Morgan Stanley, Chat GPT may be a disrupter but to sustain itself in the same market as Google they need to improve a lot and offer better solutions, and right now that is not the case. With so much clamor around chat GPT, one may ask does it work? And will it take over humans Well as of now the AI system is not as accurate as it should be and does not give out correct answers every time. It also struggles with mathematics, however, constant usage of the software and expanding database can certainly help it improve.
‘This AI tool can prove to be a help to writers but I do not believe that it can replace that human touch. It does not possess the creativity, critical thinking, and the understanding of the context that a human can bring to the table.’ Shares Partho Dasgupta BARC Ex CEO. One problem that any AI based technology faces is the bias of information. The AI will produce results based on the information that is fed into it, which can sometimes be biased. Even though it is quick to impress the pitfalls cannot be ignored.
Recently there were talks about how Chat GPT can easily pass exams in prestigious universities, it was only a matter of time that engineers brought tools to detect materials written by AI Chatbots. After all the questions and fear around chat GPT replacing human writers or the efforts put in by students to write exams, Edward Tian, a student at Princeton university, announced the launch of GPT Zero which is an anti chat GPT software capable of detecting AI content. How the world of writing and search engines develop around these two forces is yet to be seen.
The world of technology can be terrific or terrifying at the same time. “As technology evolves, there will always be this moral dilemma and questions around its misuse”, states Partho Dasgupta. With AI art generators, Chat GPT the world seems to be moving towards a human free space where computers do all the work, however, it is the human flaw that is sometimes the art itself.
