Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal on Tuesday said that opening the space industry for private players will be a big part of Prime Minister Modi’s third term.
In his address at the inauguration of ITU World Telecommunication Standardisation Assembly – India Mobile Congress 2024, Mittal said the developments in the satellite communication (SatCom) sector is a huge development that India is seeing.
“It is almost impossible for terrestrial services to cover every square inch of any country. With the launch of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) networks now we have the possibility of connecting at 4G speeds and massive capacities in the hands of those who have been left behind,” Mittal said.
He assured that with the launch of satcom services in India anybody in however remote area or conditions will be able to connect to fast speed network.
Mittal then turned the attention towards the growing debate across the world on the coexistence of terrestrial networks.
“Intertemporal choices will have to be made as to how satellites need to coexist with terrestrial networks,” said Mittal.
Drawing the attention of the Prime Minister on the entry of private players in this space, Mittal urged that these companies should take the telecom licenses like everybody else.
“Those satellite companies who have ambitions to come into urban areas to serve elite retail customers, need to take the telecom license like everybody else. They should be bound by the same conditions. Be bound with the same conditions, pay the license fee and secure their networks as telecom companies do,” said Mittal.
