India has committed investments of more than USD 240 billion to the water sector and is carrying out the largest dam rehabilitation programme in the world in addition to measures to raise groundwater levels, said Jal Shakti Minister, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Thursday.
In his speech to the UN Water Conference 2023, Shekhawat emphasised the ambitious initiatives and efforts being made in India to ensure water security and achieve the sustainable development goal (SDG) 6 of clean water and sanitation for everyone.
He stated that in collaboration with entrepreneurs, start-ups, and organisations representing water users, the government has committed more than 240 billion dollars in investments to the water sector.
"India is implementing two flagship missions to ensure universal access to sanitation and drinking water,” Shekhawat said.
He said India is launching the largest dam renovation programme in the world, to construct climate resilience and crucial water storage infrastructure.
Further, due to the country's unique geography, India is among the largest users of groundwater in the world, Shekhawat explained.
