India’s football icon Sunil Chhetri has announced his decision to retire from international football following the country’s FIFA World Cup qualification match against Kuwait on 6 June.
In a heartfelt video posted on his social media accounts, the national team captain confirmed his departure from the international stage, marking the end of an era in Indian football.
The 39-year-old striker, who made his international debut against Pakistan on 12 June 2005, leaves behind a legacy as one of India’s most celebrated footballers. With 94 goals in 150 matches, Chhetri stands as the third-highest scorer among currently active players globally, behind legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Chhetri’s illustrious career has been adorned with numerous accolades, including six AIFF Player of the Year awards, the Arjuna Award in 2011, and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2019. His leadership and exceptional skills have made him an inspiration to football enthusiasts across India and beyond.
