I know what you’re pondering upon. We all have heard of the famous dictum ‘there is always a woman behind every successful man’, but Subha Rajan prefers to introduce a different spectrum to the whole concept.
When asked about her personal life and marriage, she had an answer that most women in India would quest for in their lives.
Subha Rajan’s husband was a manager of a leading bank in Liberia when civil war broke out in the state in 1989 and he got abducted. Subha, along with her two children, were contrived to live on leaves and tea for days. She hurried out of Liberia leaving her husband behind, unknown yet hopeful for him to return back to India. Yes, he did return; but bruised and shot. It did paralyze him physically, but strengthened him emotionally. Subha continued being involved in her work and started taking care of her husband.
When asked about her relationship, she responded to the journalist, “You know whenever I come back home from work late at night, sometimes at 12 at times 1; my husband never asks me the three Ws: Where, Why and With whom. You know what he asks me each night I come home late from work,’ Have you eaten food?’ I hope your question got answered.”
While delivering her speech in the Women Economic Forum she said, “Whatever I am today, I owe it to my husband. My husband is the reason behind me being successful and yes today I can proudly say, that there’s a man behind every successful woman.”
Today, Rajan is a senior advisor at Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). She is the first CEO of Overseas Indian Felicitation Centre (OIFC) and has travelled to over 80 countries. She has also worked with great leaders including Hillary Clinton, Benazir Bhutto, Prince Charles, Putin, Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
