Xiaomi Redmi Y2 India Launch Today: Expected Price, Specifications, And Livestream

Xiaomi is launching their new affordable smartphone Redmi Y2 in India today (7 June), which is scheduled to start at 3 pm.  Xiaomi has been teasing the launch of a selfie-centric smartphone in India from a long time. Also, in all the teasers, letter ‘Y’ is highlighted which also indicates the new phone to be Redmi Y2- the successor of last year’s Redmi Y1.

Xiaomi has already announced that Redmi Y2 will feature a 16-MP AI-assisted front camera with LED selfie light, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Last month, the Chinese brand launched a selfie-centric smartphone Redmi S2 in their domestic market. Basically Xiaomi is launching Redmi S2 in India, rebranded as Redmi Y2.

The e-commerce website Amazon has already listed the upcoming Redmi Y2, which means it is going to be an Amazon exclusive in India.

Talking about the price, Redmi S2 is available in China starting from CNY 999 (roughly Rs 10,800) for 3GB RAM variant and CNY 1,299 (roughly Rs 13,800) for 4GB RAM variant. So, the Indian prices of Redmi S2 (rebranded as Redmi Y2 in India) could be around or probably less than that.

Redmi Y2 is expected to be available in three colours- rose gold, champagne gold, and platinum silver. 

Redmi Y2 Specifications 

Redmi Y2 is packed with Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core processor, which is coupled with Adreno 506 GPU, and 3GB/4GB RAM. The storage options are 32GB and 64GB, with expandable storage up to 256GB through a MicroSD card. It runs on MIUI 9 based on Android

The handset features a 5.99-inch FHD (1440x720) with 18:9 aspect ratio and 70.8 % NTSC colour gamut. It sports a dual camera setup at the rear which has 16-megapixel+5-megapixel sensors with f/2.2 aperture, PDAF, and LED flash. The rear camera is touted to have AI Portrait mode, HDR, and Panoramic mode.  On the front is a 16-megapixel selfie snapper with AI Portrait mode.

The dual-SIM handset is backed by a 3,080mAh battery. For security, this phone has face recognition and houses a rear mounted fingerprint sensor. It measures 160.73 x 77.26 x 8.1mm and weighs 170 grams.
