Social media platform Twitter which began its mass layoff drive on Friday, announced job cuts across India unit's engineering and entire marketing and communications vertical, a media report stated, citing sources aware of the development.
While the report did not specify the number of people laid off, sources said the employees in the sales, engineering and partnerships divisions were "affected," apart from the disbanded departments.
Earlier on Friday, the platform closed its offices worldwide and informed employees that they would be intimated about whether they are being laid off through an email.
The company said it would start alerting employees about staff cuts on Friday by 16:00 GMT (9:30 pm IST).
"In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday," said the email sent on Thursday, as seen by news agency Reuters.
It added that its offices would be temporarily closed, and all badge access will be suspended to ensure the safety of employees, Twitter systems and customer data.
Some employees also filed a class action lawsuit against Twitter, arguing that the company was conducting mass layoffs without providing the required 60-day advance notice, violating federal and California law, news agency Bloomberg reported.
The suit also asked the San Francisco federal court to issue an order to restrict Twitter from soliciting employees being laid off to sign documents without informing them of the pendency of the case.
