Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has appointed a legal representative in Brazil to meet one of the requirements imposed by the country’s Supreme Court, signaling a move toward compliance with local regulations.
Lawyers Andre Zonaro and Sergio Rosenthal announced that Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao has been designated as the firm’s legal representative, a role crucial for foreign companies operating in Brazil. This appointment comes after X had previously closed its offices in the country and lost its legal standing when it failed to name a new representative by mid-August.
The Supreme Court’s action to block X’s services followed the platform’s non-compliance with court orders aimed at combating the spread of hate speech. Users found themselves cut off within hours as mobile and internet service providers were ordered to block access to the platform.
The ongoing dispute has highlighted tensions between Musk and Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has been vocal about the need for social media platforms to take action against harmful content.
In addition to naming a legal representative, X’s legal team in Brazil has indicated that the firm is beginning to comply with the Supreme Court's orders regarding the removal of problematic content. This development is part of a broader effort by X to restore its operations in Brazil and navigate the regulatory landscape shaped by ongoing concerns over misinformation and hate speech.
