The declaration of Covid -19 as a pandemic by World Health Organization has sparked concerns on the need to take necessary precautions through disinfection. While limiting public exposure, it is imperative that one is equally vigilant and implements safe practices at home as well.
Use alcohol -based hand sanitizer: Ensure that you have an alcohol-based hand sanitizer at home. Use it frequently to wash your hands especially after touching your nose, eyes or face.
Clean public areas of the house: The ‘word public’ refers to the area frequented by visitors such as door- knobs, bathroom countertops, cabinet door handles. Do ensure to wipe them every alternate day.
Remember cleaning is different from disinfecting. Cleaning wipes away dirt and impurities from surfaces. Disinfecting kills germs on surfaces by using chemicals. Clean surfaces using detergent or soap followed by disinfecting through diluted household bleach solution or alcohol -based solution. Always follow instructions given on label. Also, ensure that product has not passed its expiration date.
Wear disposable gloves while cleaning: Wear disposable gloves while cleaning the home and discard them immediately after use. Clean hands immediately after use.
Clean soft surfaces as well: Keep soft surfaces such as rugs, carpets, mats clean by using appropriate media and dry them as well. If you use vacuum cleaner for carpets, ensure that you empty the bag frequently. Use a damp duster to tap dust and wash it once you are done with cleaning. Do not forget to wash your hands after handling dirty items.
Keep clothes clean: Wash your clothes regularly. Use a bag liner that can be laundered for stocking dirty clothes. Avoid excessive tossing as it would disperse germs in the air. Tumble drying on high for more than 28 minutes is effective against harmful micro-organisms. Hanging your clothes in direct sunlight also kills germs.
Take home-made meals: Cook your food and avoid outside food as far as possible. Raw meat should be avoided.
Clean your fridge: Clear any food leftovers from your fridge. Ensure that you have ample stock of fresh fruits and vegetables. Dry goods such as oats, beans are not only nutritious but also have a longer shelf life. Ensure that you store them in airtight containers in a cool, dry place.
Exercise at your home for time being: You may want to consider exercising at home instead of going to gym. Burpees, push-ups and squats are good options for home exercise.
Be vigilant if you own a pet: Be extra- vigilant if you have a pet at home. Wash your hands before cooking or eating after touching your pet.
More importantly, be aware of Covid-19 symptoms and see a doctor immediately if you or any of your family member reports flu-like symptoms. Trust authentic sources of information and spread awareness on dos and donts as much as you can.
