The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and IIT Gandhinagar have unveiled India’s latest supercomputer called ‘Param Ananta’. This development is in line with phase two of the central government’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
Param Ananta is capable of delivering a peak performance of 838 teraflops. This heightened capacity of computing will help expedite the research projects in various fields, including bioengineering, computational fluid dynamics, data science, machine learning and more.
The supercomputer was approved in 2020. The system sources most of its equipment from the country, which have been manufactured and assembled in under ‘Make in India’. The system has a mixed set of CPU and GPU nodes along with high throughput storage and high bandwidth memory modules.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement, “The state-of-the-art supercomputer Param Infinite was dedicated to the nation under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) at IIT Gandhinagar. The mission is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Department of Science and Technology. It was commissioned on May 30, 2022.”
Despite its high compute capacity, Param Ananta ranks behind C-DAC’s Param Siddhi-AI, which delivers a peak performance of 3.3 petaflops.
