Samsung's smallest gadget yet, the Galaxy Ring, has finally made its way from teaser to tangible reality. First showcased at Samsung's Galaxy S24 series event in San Jose, this smart ring promises 24/7 health monitoring in a form factor you can wear all day, every day. After its initial tease in San Jose, I finally had the chance to get my hands on it in Paris—and it might just be the edge Samsung needs in its healthcare and wearable endeavours to counter Apple's dominance, especially given that the Cupertino-based giant doesn't have an offering in this space.
Weighing in at a mere 2.3 to 3 grams, the Galaxy Ring boasts 10ATM water resistance and a titanium grade 5 frame. This isn't just comfortable; it's well-built, good-looking (especially in silver), and highly functional, packing an impressive amount of technology into its diminutive form. Perhaps most remarkably, it promises up to seven days of battery life on a single charge, with its accompanying case offering even more power on the go.
For those concerned about fit, Samsung has thought of everything. The Galaxy Ring comes in nine different sizes, ensuring a perfect fit even for my scrawny fingers. It's not just about size either—the ring will be available in titanium gold and black, in addition to the silver I handled.
As with all of Samsung's recent offerings, AI is at the heart of the Galaxy Ring's experience. Deeply integrated into Samsung Health, and notably without any subscription required, its AI sleep algorithm promises to help users understand their sleep patterns. It provides a sleep score, complete with snoring analysis and metrics such as movement during sleep, latency, and heart and respiratory rates.
The ring will also detail an energy score powered by Galaxy AI and provide wellness tips based on your current physical state. Heart health is a significant part of Samsung's healthcare story with this device, offering live heart rate checks, auto workout detection, and inactivity monitoring.
Beyond health tracking, the Galaxy Ring extends the capabilities of your Galaxy smartphone. Users can control their phone with a double pinch gesture, and if misplaced, the ring can be located using the Find My Ring feature on Galaxy Find.
In a world where wearable technology is becoming increasingly ubiquitous, the Samsung Galaxy Ring represents a bold step into a new form factor. It combines the comprehensive health tracking we've come to expect from smartwatches with the unobtrusiveness of traditional jewellery. While it's too early to declare it the "one ring to rule them all," it certainly positions Samsung at the forefront of this emerging category of wearables.
As Apple continues to dominate the smartwatch market, Samsung's venture into smart rings could be the differentiator it needs. Only time will tell if this tiny gadget can make a big impact, but based on these first impressions, the Galaxy Ring is certainly a contender worth watching—or perhaps, worth wearing.
In India, this is also a big deal because local players like boAt and Noise at the lower segments have dabbled in this product category and are seeing good traction.
