Commissioned in an impressive 31 months, the GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) was inaugurated on March 14, 2008, with a commitment to excellence and sustainability.
GHIAL is strategically positioned at the geographical centre of India, making it a hub for air travel within a two-hour flying time to all major Indian cities. Furthermore, its location within a five-hour radius from major cities in the Middle East and South-East Asia positions GHIAL as a vital centre for both domestic and international travel.
Demonstrating a commitment to eco-friendly practices, GHIAL focuses on energy conservation as a core aspect of its strategy. The Passenger Terminal Building, a green building designed to maximise natural light, is powered by a 10 MW solar energy facility that fulfils approximately 50 per cent of its energy needs. As of June 2023, GHIAL transitioned to 100 per cent sustainable green energy by procuring Green Power from the government electricity board.
Adhering to ISO 50001:2011 standards, GHIAL is dedicated to energy conservation and efficiency. The airport implements industry-best Operation and Maintenance (O&M) practices for all equipment, procures energy-efficient equipment, conducts market studies for advanced products, and regularly reviews and analyses energy usage. The commitment to energy excellence is recognised through awards, including being the first airport to receive the "National Energy Leader" award four times in a row and the "Excellent Energy-Efficient Unit" award eight times from the Confederation of Indian Industry.
GHIAL places a strong emphasis on waste reduction and sustainable waste management practices. The airport achieved the status of being Single-Use Plastic Free in March 2020, implementing various measures such as using jute products, wooden and starch-based cutlery, and compostable plastics. The airport has phased out plastic cutlery in in-flight kitchens and food courts and replaced water bottles with glass tumblers in conference rooms.
Collaborating with local communities and partners, GHIAL actively engages in minimising food waste through effective municipal solid waste management. The airport has organised workshops for stakeholders on sustainable waste management, implemented segregation at source, and converted food and kitchen waste into compost. Regular waste audits measure the effectiveness of waste reduction initiatives, contributing to GHIAL's recognition as a Green Airport.
