Elon Musk on Wednesday said that he had “killed” the official label on social media platform Twitter after introducing it on the same day.
Earlier in the day, noted entities and individuals including as Reuters, The New York Times and PM Modi had received the ‘official’ label from Twitter. These gray checkmark badges were given to official accounts of popular organisations and individuals.
The 'official' was label was also given to the Twitter handles of Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
But later on Wednesday, the gray official badge had reverted to the original blue checkmark, which was spotted by several influential accounts.
Elon Musk in a tweet responded to popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee saying that he had “killed it [ the ‘official’ label]”. He added that “Blue check will be the great leveler”, essentially backtracking on the idea of handing out gray checkmarks for influential accounts on Twitter.
Musk had earlier warned users that his social media platform would “do lots of dumb things in coming months.” He had added that Twitter would keep what works for the platform and discard what does not.
The blue checkmark and Twitter Blue subscription had already created a lot of confusion amongst Twitter users and Musk’s announcement on the ‘official’ label had further added to the chaos on the platform.
Amongst those who received the ‘official’ label during the rollout was MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar. He had expressed his excitement on Twitter for the same.
The ‘official’ label has now reverted to the original blue checkmark after the Twitter rollback.
