"Indian data should remain in India's data centres," said Akash Ambani, Chairman Reliance Jio Infocomm, in a call for India to accelerate its adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). At the International Telecommunication Union - World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (ITU-WTSA) 2024 inauguration session, Ambani talked about the importance of a self-reliant approach to harness the technology's full potential. The event also commenced the initiation of India Mobile Congress 2024.
While speaking, Ambani pointed to the necessity for regulatory reforms to allow this goal, suggesting for a revision of the 2020 Data Centre regulatory, “The scale and speed of multilingual data generation India, which will drive the AI revolution will grow exponentially, we request the government to expedite the updating of the 2020 draft of the data centre policy," Ambani said.
The Jio chairman also pointed out the transformative impact of AI across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture and manufacturing. “AI is poised to revolutionise industries and improve the quality of life for millions across the nation,” he added.
To support this technological leap, Ambani urged the government to offer substantial incentives for Indian companies focused on developing AI and machine learning data centers. By saying, “Indian companies ready to setup AI and machine learning data centres should get all necessary incentives, including incentives for power consumption,” he specifically pointed to energy consumption as a key challenge, calling for initiatives that would create a supportive environment for companies to establish data centers within the country.
Speaking about the India's tremendous digital advancement, Ambani remarked the country's transition from 2G speeds to galloping down the 5G highway. He expressed optimism about India's objectives for success in 6G technology, pointing to the country's progress toward becoming a global digital leader.
Building up on the same optimism, Ambani said, “Indian mobile companies are in a position to offer solutions to other nations, including the developed ones, therefore India needs an accelerated talent generation on a scale that is necessary to make India a global AI leader. Many more job opportunities and entrepreneurship opportunities are on their way as India moves towards AI adoption.”
