After providing facility to link Aadhaar with Permanent Account Number (PAN) card last week, the income tax (I-T) department on Monday (15 May) came up with yet another service which makes corrections in Aadhaar and PAN card details easier.
I-T department website provides links for updating Aadhaar and PAN card details and applying for a fresh PAN card. The application can be done online.
By making an amendment in the Finance Bill, Union finance minister Arun Jaitley made Aadhar mandatory for filing income tax returns and made the linking of PAN with Aadhar a must to curb tax evasion.
Over 1.22 crore people have already linked Aadhaar with their PAN but the number is critically low as there are over 25 crore PAN card holders and 111 crore Aadhaar card holders in the country. As per income tax statistics, only 6 crore people file income tax returns at present.
Anyone who avails the facility will have to upload documents on the website as a ‘proof for data update’ request. It also requires a person to put in PAN and Aadhaar number along with his/her name as per the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) data.
After verification from the UIDAI, the linking will be confirmed. In case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name provided, a one-time-password will be sent to the mobile number registered with the UIDAI, a PTI report said.
