Google launched Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL- the second generation of Pixel smartphones at its global event on October 4 in San Francisco. Pixel 2 comes in three colours- just black, clearly white, and kinda blue; Pixel 2 XL is available in two colours- black & white and just black. Let’s find out how their specs stand against each other.
Processor, Software, and Storage
Both Pixel smartphones run on Android 8.0 Oreo and will be getting OS, security updates from Google for next three years. The second-gen Pixel smartphones are powered by 2.35GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Octa-core processor coupled with 4GB RAM.
Both Pixel 2 and Pixel 2XL smartphones are available in two storage variants of 64GB/128GB; there is no microSD card slot so the storage is not expandable.
Display and Camera
Talking about the display, the regular Pixel 2 features a 5-inch FHD (1920x1080) AMOLED display with 2.5D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. On the other hand, the larger Pixel 2 XL features a 6-inch QHD+ (2880x1440) pOLED display with 3D curved glass and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The Pixel 2 XL’s display is nearly bezel-less with 18:9 aspect ratio.
The main highlight of Pixel 2 is its camera, DxOMark Mobile has given the highest rating to second-gen Pixel smartphone. According to DxO, Pixel 2’s camera is better than iPhone 8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Both handsets sport a 12.2-megapixel rear camera with laser autofocus + dual pixel phase detection, OIS, EIS, and f/1.8 aperture. It records 4K videos @ 30fps, 1080p @ 30fps, 60fps, and 120fps. On the front of both devices is an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with fixed focus and f/2.4 aperture, it is capable of shooting 1080p videos @ 30fps.
Battery and Other Features
Pixel 2 is backed by a 2700mAh battery which delivers up to 7 hours of power after 15 minutes of charge and Pixel 2 XL by a 3520mAh which also up to 7 hours of power after 15 minutes of charge. Following the trend, Google has also ditched the 3.5mm audio-jack and the audio is routed through a headphone adaptor.
The new Pixel smartphones come with Active Edge feature which allows users to launch Google Assistant by squeezing the device which is a pretty similar feature to the HTC’s Edge Sense.
Connectivity options are- dual-band WI-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0 + LE, GPS, USB Type-C, GLONASS, and NFC. Both devices are IP67 water and dust resistance. The aluminum unibody smartphones have a fingerprint sensor at their rear panels which unlocks them.
The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are launched with the e-SIM feature but Indian variants will be supporting single nano-SIM.
Price and Availability In India
Pixel smartphones will be exclusively available on Flipkart in India, regular Pixel 2 will be available from November 1 and Pixel 2 XL from November 15. Pixel 2 starts from Rs 61,000 for 64GB and Rs 70,000 for 128GB variant. On the other hand, Pixel 2 XL is priced at Rs 73,000 for 64GB and Rs 83,000 for 128GB variant.
Both smartphones feature same camera setup and are same on performance. The major difference is among their display size which is easily noticeable. The display is the only major difference which might compel buyers to look towards Pixel 2 XL instead of regular Pixel 2. You will have to spend more than 11 grands to for the better display. The price difference in both 64GB and 128GB variant is more than 12 grands; this is the amount if you want the larger pixel with a 0better display and everything else is pretty same.
