Global shipments of personal computers rose by 3 per cent in the second quarter of 2024, driven by a surge in demand for AI-capable devices, according to data from research firm IDC.
The market achieved 64.9 million units in shipments during the three months ending in June, the second consecutive quarter of growth after experiencing a two-year decline. This rebound follows a lull in orders that ensued after the pandemic-driven buying spree.
Apple experienced the highest growth among PC makers, with a 20.8 per cent increase in shipments from the second quarter of 2023. Acer Group followed closely, registering a 13.7 per cent rise.
Despite these gains, weak performance in China continued to weigh on the overall market.
IDC pointed out that excluding China, global shipments saw an even higher year-over-year growth of over 5 per cent for the quarter. Lenovo Group maintained its lead with a 22.7 per cent market share, followed by HP with 21.1 per cent. Dell Technologies, holding a 15.5 per cent market share, saw its shipments decline by 2.4 per cent.
