DRI Seizes 2.5 Cr Worth Of Crypto Mining Machines From Dcrypt Import

In a major crackdown on undervalued imports, customs officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized crypto mining machines worth 2.5 crores from Dcrypt Import, a leading importer in the field. The proprietor, Nishkarsh Jain, is currently in talks with officials to clear his stock. The incident highlights the need for transparency and accuracy in import practices, particularly when it comes to the rapidly-growing field of cryptocurrency mining. Dcrypt Import was established in July 2021, around the time when the crypto prices were at their peak. Nishkarsh Jain introduced the idea of importing Bitcoincryptocurrency mining machines, which allow users to mine their crypto coins. However, during customs clearance, he had declared the value of the machines to be USD 300-400 per machine, while their actual value was around  USD10,000 to USD 15,000 per machine.

The customs officials seized the consignment in July-August 2022, citing undervaluation. Nishkarsh Jain has claimed that there is a foreign investor involved in his business.

As a penalty, Nishkarsh has to pay up to 2 crores for duty and penalty with interest to the Government of India. Despite his efforts and that of his team to get the release of the seized consignment, the incident casts a questionable stance for the import industry.

The seizure of crypto mining machines has brought to light the issue of undervaluation and the need for importers to declare the actual value of their goods. The incident also raises concerns about the legality of crypto mining in India and the regulatory framework surrounding it.
