Commission For Dialogue On Malvinas Established In India

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, Santiago Cafiero is launching a commission for the dialogue on the question of the Malvinas Islands in India, on 24 April 2022.

The commission seeks to promote compliance with the resolutions of the United Nations and the declarations of other international fora on the question of the Malvinas Islands, which call for the resumption of negotiations between Argentina and the United Kingdom in order to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, according to the official statement. 

The commission is formed by personalities from different backgrounds representing the rich diversity of Indian society, and who are committed to the ideals of peace, justice and the respect of international law.

The members are Suresh Prabhu, Shashi Tharoor, Tara Gandhi Bhattacharjee, Shazia Ilmi, Former Ambassador Rengaraj Vishwanathan and Dr. Sonya Gupta.

According to the statement, they will work together to remind us of the dangers created by the militarisation of the Malvinas Islands by the UK, the need to respect international law and to abide by the call of the international community and several multilateral organisations asking for a peaceful solution of the cited sovereignty dispute.

The mentioned call by the United Nations is shared by several multilateral fora, such as the Group of 77 + China, the organisation of american states (OAS), the Community of Latin-American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), and the Ibero-American Summits, among others.

Meanwhile, India has consistently backed UN Resolutions calling for a negotiated solution to the question of the Malvinas Islands and, as part of the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24), has supported the yearly adoption, by consensus, of resolutions on the issue. India has also endorsed the call for the cited dialogue as part of the Group of 77 + China.
