The OnePlus 3 was one of 2016’s most popular flagship devices and earned an easy recommendation if you wanted top-tier components at half the price. Surprising then that the company went ahead with a mid-cycle refresh of the barely 6-month-old device, but here we are with the underthe-hood upgrade that is the OnePlus 3T.
Visually, the 3T retains the exact same design of the OnePlus 3 down to … well, a T, and the only way to tell them apart is by the new gunmetal color that is unique to the 3T. The display too builds on the OnePlus 3’s full-HD resolution optic AMOLED display, which means you get rich contrast levels and an adequately bright display for outdoor use.
Under the hood, the 3T joins the rather elite list of phones sporting Qualcomm’s top-shelf Snapdragon 821 processor, which offers a little over 10 per cent more power than the previous 820. Now, to be fair, it’s only the most graphically intensive games and heavy multitasking that would tax the OnePlus 3’s Snapdragon 820 with 6 gigabytes of memory, so the move to the latest chip, while discernible, is incredibly subtle. If you have some extra cash, there is a new 128GB storage variant at a five-grand premium over the base Rs 29,999 64GB variant.
Now, while the 16MP rear camera may not have changed, the front camera gets a boost from 8MP to a 16MP f/2.0 fixed focus shooter, which takes significantly improved selfies under just about any light condition. What’s most impressive in the 3T is that OnePlus has managed to pack in a bigger 3,400 mAh battery into the same form factor, without adding any weight to the device. The bigger battery lets the 3T go up to a day and half on a full charge, plus there’s Dash Charging, OnePlus’ fast charging tech which gets you sixty per cent charge in 30 minutes. Dash Charging finally lets you bid goodbye to the daily ritual of charging your phone every night.
With the recent upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat, the 3T leaves little room for complaint and offers great value for money for folks looking for a no-compromise flagship device.
