In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle, Chanchal Kumar, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1992 batch, has been appointed as the Secretary for the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region. This decision follows a modification of an earlier order that initially posted Kumar as the Secretary for the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
Kumar, who presently serves as an Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, will now take on the pivotal role of Secretary for the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region. The reshuffling became necessary due to the appointment of Lok Ranjan, an IAS officer from the 1989 batch, as the Administrative Member of the Central Administrative Tribunal.
This reshuffle also involves modifying a previous order that assigned Kumar to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, following the superannuation of Rajiv Bansal, an IAS officer from the 1988 batch, on August 31, 2023.
In the centre, he has served as a managing director of Road Transport & Highways National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) in New Delhi. In cadre, he was the principal secretary to the CM of Bihar, and from 2017 to 2022, he was in additional charge as principal secretary of the urban development department.
His central deputation tenure is until July 2029, and his diverse portfolio is anticipated to be fruitful for the newly appointed position.
