BuzzFeed in its internal memo has indicated towards using OpenAI tools to enhance and personalise its content. But in a statement to Reuters, the internet media company clarified that it will not be using ChatGPT, the wildly popular AI-powered chatbot created by OpenAI.
In the internal memo to staff, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti mentioned that artificial intelligence (AI) will be one of the two major trends which will define the future of digital media. He said that the company will launch AI-inspired content in 2023 along with other AI-powered enhancements to quiz experience too.
In the memo viewed by Reuters, Peretti said, "In 2023, you'll see AI inspired content move from an R&D stage to part of our core business, enhancing the quiz experience, informing our brainstorming, and personalizing our content for our audience."
The news of the memo was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
“Over the next three years, the future of digital media will be defined by two major trends: creators, and AI. We will help shape these trends to create massive value for our audience, our employees, and our shareholders,” Peretti mentioned in his memo.
The shares of BuzzFeed jumped on the news of a deal with Meta and plans of it leveraging AI to enhance its platform on Thursday. In extended trading, its stock was noted to be 19 per cent higher. In fact, the stock had nearly doubled in value earlier in the day when the Wall Street Journal report came out.
BuzzFeed had announced last month that it would layoff 12 per cent of its staff to cut spends. The company’s net loss has jumped to USD 27 million from USD 3.6 million in a year.
