The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clinched its third consecutive victory in Arunachal Pradesh’s Assembly elections, cementing its majority with 33 out of 60 seats, according to Election Commission officials.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein successfully retained their seats in the election fray. The BJP seized 10 seats uncontested, further solidifying its stronghold in the northeastern state.
Independent candidate Wanglam Sawin emerged victorious in the Khonsa constituency, underlining the diverse political landscape of Arunachal Pradesh. Other political entities such as the National People's Party (NPEP) and the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA) also secured seats, adding to the plurality of representation in the state assembly.
CM Khandu took to social media to extend heartfelt congratulations to Tesam Pongte and Wanglin Lowangdong for their respective triumphs in the electoral battleground. Wangling Lowangdong, who had previously won the Borduria-Bogapani seat in 2019 under the Congress banner, clinched victory for the BJP this time, defeating Jowang Hosai of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) by a margin of 1,452 votes.
In a significant electoral outcome, BJP candidate Hamjong Tangha emerged victorious in the Changlang South constituency, overcoming Timpu Ngemu of the National People's Party by a margin of 1,482 votes. Early trends indicated BJP's dominance in nine additional seats, complementing the 10 uncontested wins, while NPEP led in one seat out of the total 60.
With over 2,000 officials deployed for the counting process spread across two days, the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer ensured meticulous arrangements for the smooth conduct of the election results. The counting of votes for Lok Sabha polls is scheduled for 4 June, maintaining the electoral momentum in the state.
