Apple, Samsung Electronics and HP reportedly emerged among the biggest names to freeze new imports of laptops and tablets to India after the country’s sudden ban on inbound shipments without a license, said reports.
The representatives for India’s trade ministry, Apple, Samsung and HP have not officially responded to their call on imports.
Reports however mentioned their import halt would create additional problems for manufacturers who are already grappling with a global inventory glut and other sales triggers. This is likely to delay launches in India or could even cause product shortages in a market, it added.
Meanwhile, it is also reported that the import restriction marks India’s sudden policy shift.
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on Thursday imposed restrictions on the import of specific laptops and computers falling under HSN code 8471.
