Airtel on Wednesday announced that it would establish a data centre through an investment of Rs 2,000 crore in the state of Telangana. The announcement by the telco was made at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Davos, Switzerland.
The hyperscale data centre will have the capacity of 60 megawatts (MW) of IT in the first phase. The project is expected to be completed in next 5-7 years.
Airtel’s investment for the data centre in Telangana will come through its data centre arm, Nxtra Data Centers.
Telangana IT and Industries Minister KT Rama Rao had met with Bharti Enterprises founder and chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal on Wednesday prior to the announcement.
In a statement, the Minister said, “I am very happy to see Airtel-Nxtra Data Centers invest in Telangana. Hyderabad is not the hub for Hyperscale Data Centres in India and Airtel’s investment adds to the pace we look to keep up. I hope to continue this relationship and hope the State can work together with Airtel-Nxtra to work on creating digital infrastructure to keep up with the ever-growing industry in the State.”
The data centre in Telangana will be one of Airtel’s biggest greenfield data centre projects in India.
“Since the initiation of our discussions on the project in the May 2022 edition of the WEF Annual Meeting, the government has worked at a very quick pace to ensure the project can get into construction (phase) in a matter of a few months,” Mittal said.
