Marking an improvement in its performance, the domestic airlines carried 129.87 lakh passengers in July 2024, registering a 7.33 per cent growth as compared to July 2023, as per the data from the directorate general of civil aviation on Monday. The domestic air passenger traffic in July 2023 stood at 121 lakh.
Domestic airlines' combined air passenger traffic from January to July 2024 stood at 932.35 lakh compared to 881.94 lakh during the same period last year, witnessing an annual growth of 4.70 per cent.
IndiGo emerged as the biggest player in the segment with a 62 per cent market share, up from 60.8 per cent in June 2024. IndiGo carried 80.47 lakh passengers in July 2024, up from 80.30 lakh in the previous month.
Air India remained at the second spot during the month with a market share of 14.3 per cent, a marginal decline from 14.6 per cent in June 2024. The airline carried 18.6 lakh passengers during the month, registering a decline from 19.22 lakh in June 2024.
The cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for July 2024 stood at 1.9 per cent. Indiaone Air’s cancellation rate was the highest at 18.01 per cent. Spice Jet had their 3.11 per cent of flights cancelled, while the cancellation rate of IndiGo stood at 2.25 per cent in July 2024.
While technical issues contributed 17.2 per cent towards the cancellations, the operational reasons had an 8 per cent stake in the flights getting cancelled. A total of 1,54,770 passengers were affected due to cancellations in July.
Spice Jet had the highest passenger load factor (PLF) in the July month at 90.3 per cent, followed by Vistara at 90 per cent. IndiGo had a PLF of 84.6 per cent in July 2024.
1,114 passengers were denied boarding during the month and the airlines had to dole out Rs 112.71 lakh towards compensation and facilities. A total of 1,097 passenger-related complaints were received by the scheduled domestic airlines, the DGCA data pointed out.
