IAS officer Ashish Upadhyaya, Special Secretary and Financial Advisor, Ministry of Power has been appointed as Secretary, National Commission for Backward Classes at the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in place of Rajeev Ranjan upon his superannuation on 31 December 2023.
Ashish Upadhyay is a civil servant with experience in various government departments. He has served as a Part-time Official Director on the Board of NTPC, representing the Ministry of Power, Government of India, from 22 January 2020. He is an IAS Officer from the 1989 Batch, belonging to the Madhya Pradesh cadre.
Upadhyaya holds a post-graduation degree in History from St John College, Agra. He has accumulated over 31 years of experience by serving in different capacities in the state government of Madhya Pradesh. Notably, he has worked as an Additional District Collector in coal-bearing areas like Anuppur, Shahdol and Umaria.
With more than five years of experience as a Collector in three districts in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he has gained administrative expertise. Throughout his career, Upadhyaya has held positions at the state level, including Secretary and Principal Secretary in various departments such as Home, Higher Education, and Finance.
In addition to his administrative roles, he served as Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Coal, where he contributed to the application of space technology to combat illegal mining. He has also pursued further education, including post-graduation in Economics, a law degree (LLB) and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University in the United States.
Since 14 November 2019, Ashish Upadhyaya has been working as an Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Power and now he has been appointed as Secretary of National Commission for Backward Classes, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.
