In a significant move to promote domestic manufacturing, 80% of Indian steel producers have branded their products with the ‘Made-in-India’ label, according to an official announcement on Monday. This follows the Ministry of Steel’s initiative, launched in November of last year, to bolster the national identity of Indian steel products.
"The Ministry of Steel was the first to initiate and complete this branding exercise. These efforts will result in the branding of 80 million tonnes of steel out of a total production of 125 million tonnes in the first phase," the official stated.
Indian steel producers have standardized labels across product categories, ensuring the ‘Made in India’ logo is prominently displayed on each label. This rollout began on November 4, 2023, with major players like RINL, JSPL, and TATA Steel Ltd already covering 100% of their product ranges. The remaining producers are expected to complete the branding process by the end of June.
"The new label will help create a common brand value for all Made-in-India steel products both nationally and internationally," explained the source. "It will encourage manufacturers to maximize their local manufacturing processes, providing a significant boost to the Indian economy."
The initiative is seen as a strategic move to establish a strong global presence for Indian steel, aligning with the broader 'Brand India Mission' and the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India). It was initially suggested by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and later developed by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), with the Steel Ministry overseeing its implementation.
In the long term, this branding is expected to serve as a key identifier for Indian steel in global markets, helping to cement India's position as a leading steel producer worldwide.
