Zia Mody, one of the founding members and managing partner, AZB & Partners, features among the top corporate lawyers in the country. Born to former attorney general, Soli Sorabjee, Mody says most of the conversations at home would revolve around law and she was naturally inclined towards the profession.
Mody alongwith other two founders of AZB, Ajay Bahl and Bahram Vakil, does not want the corporate law firm set up in 2004 to become a family run outfit. She is a fan of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who made a huge difference in the legal world not only in the US but the entire world. Besides, he father, her gurus are Justice YV Chandrachud and Justice PN Bhagwati. While she is known for her bluntness, people close to her know her affection as well. Mody’s clients including Cyrus Mistry former chairman at the Tata Group, value her for being accessible round the clock.
Mody, as a young professional, faced discrimination. At several fora, Mody has said how clients preferred her male counterparts and were more comfortable with male lawyers fighting for them in the courts. She, however, did not give up and her perseverance finally paid off.
