Microblogging platform X has introduced a community notes programme for Indian users which offers a fact-checking option while sharing a post through intermediaries on the platform.
X announced this development through its affiliated handle ‘Community Notes’, urging users to contribute to its initiative, ensuring and monitoring the right quality on the platform.
In its official post, the company said the aim was to "create an informative world by empowering users to collaboratively contribute to combating misinformation."
Additionally, the microblogging platform is encouraging people to become contributors to community notes, highlighting the various viewpoints that can assist in spreading accurate information. Nevertheless, it limits the ability to verify the credibility of a particular post X depending on the number of contributors in favor or against the post.
X believes contributors who favour a certain post over multiple instances are likely to have a similar perspective, unlike those who differ.
It claimed that the Community Notes assessment is based completely on the diverse perspectives of the contributors, their ratings in the past and how an induvial typically disagree to certain notes, helping the platform to understand the different point view. This approach has allowed contributors to replicate, analyse and audit diverse political and social spectrums and share it publicly at large.
