The Rule Of Five E's Of Effective Leadership
Leadership is an essential attribute that comes with years of experience. And games and sports play a crucial role in evolving this characteristic, said Paul Dupuis, Chairman & CEO of Randstad Japan and author of "The E5 Movement: Leadership Through the Rule of Five".
Ice skating is one such game that taught Dupuis teamwork and other important life lessons.
While speaking at the Gurugram chapter of the 4th Edition of the India Business Literature Festival (IBLF), Paul shared his journey, where the different stages taught him a number of life lessons and eventually shaped him into a leader.
Starting his career as a newspaper seller, Paul said that selling newspapers right in the early morning through the snow made him learn POA (promise of action).
He discovered the true meaning of endurance while working as a welder at Chrysler.
"Keep the legs moving and good things will happen," Paul said, quoting from an ice hockey quotes.
Talking about India as one of the stops on his overall journey, Paul said, “I have been to Jamshedpur, have been to Bhubaneswar, Cochin; and I absolutely love this country.”
Further, Paul defined the 5Es of his book titled ‘The E5 Movement: Leadership Through the Rule of Five": envision, express, excite, enable, and execute.
Later in the conversation with Puneet Chandok, President, AWS India and South Asia, on the question of the pattern of taking risks by the leaders, Paul answered, “Pursuing curiosity is a greater core element in every exceptional leader.”
While on the question of fear, he shared the story of when his boss asked him to come to India as Randstad was not doing great in He said, “Fear motivated me, fear becomes adrenaline, and fear becomes curiosity." "Fear becomes motivation to take the shot and always bounce back.”
In response to a query from the audience, Paul stated, "I hate to lose; that is one quality every exceptional leader has; second, you cannot change the world overnight; and lastly, take everything seriously and nothing personal."
