After 15 month long wait, the Central government on Wednesday announced the reopening of the semiconductor application worth USD 10 billion.
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS for the Ministry of Electronics and IT took to Twitter and wrote, "This needs to be clarified ISM @Semicon_India is today announcing that it will start accepting n considering new applicants for fabs from new & existing applicants. The first window for more expensive 28nm fabs was kept open for 45 days only in Jan 2022 and received 3 applications that were evaluated by ISM and its advisory group."
He added that the strategy now is also encouraging mature nodes of >40nm - current n new players may apply afresh in various nodes that they hv technology for.
"It is expected that some of the current applicants will reapply n new fresh investors will also apply," Chandrasekhar tweeted.
Meanwhile, the announcement is a step closer to India’s aim of becoming a semiconductor nation. The government of India has also approved a semiconductor manufacturing scheme with a financial outlay of Rs 76,000 crore in December 2021, which is likely to be increased in the future as required.
