Armed robbers targeted an Axis Bank branch in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, on Tuesday morning, making off with an estimated Rs 8.5 crore in cash and gold after injuring the bank manager, according to the police. The incident occurred around 9:30 am at the Jagatpur branch of Axis Bank, located under the jurisdiction of the city's Kotwali police station. Raigarh's Senior Superintendent of Police, Sadanand Kumar, provided details of the incident, stating that around six to seven robbers entered the bank and took bank employees hostage in a room.
The robbers demanded access to the bank's locker room and attacked the bank manager, injuring his leg with a sharp weapon. After looting the cash and gold bars and ornaments, the criminals fled the scene. Following an alert, the police arrived at the bank, and the injured bank manager was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition.
Based on the bank manager's statement, the stolen loot is estimated at Rs 7 crore in cash and Rs 1.5 crore in gold bars and ornaments, as confirmed by the police officer. The investigation into the armed robbery is ongoing, with authorities working to apprehend the culprits and recover the stolen assets.
