As cyclone Dana is likely to make landfall in Orissa and West Bengal, a lot of flights have been cancelled. When flights are delayed or cancelled due to natural calamities, passengers are left stranded. However, travel insurance can come in handy during such situations.
When Flight Is Cancelled
Travel insurance can cover flight cancellations due to a storm or any other natural calamity, but it depends on the policy. Standard travel insurance usually covers trip cancellations caused by natural disasters, including storms, under ‘Named Perils’. However, if the storm was forecasted or a government advisory was issued before you bought the insurance, it might not be covered. It’s important to check the specific terms of your policy to see if such events are included.
Since Cyclone Dana has hit the Bay of Bengal, many travel plans have been disrupted. “This is why having a comprehensive travel plan is not only advisable but also essential. It can help mitigate the financial stress that comes with flight delays, cancellations, and other unforeseen issues caused by natural disasters. Mostly all travel insurance policies offer coverage for such disruptions,” says Meet Kapadia, Head, Travel Insurance, Policybazaar, an insurance aggregator.
If you find yourself stranded at the airport due to last-minute flight cancellations or delays, travel insurance can be a lifesaver. “However, it's important to note that coverage may not apply if the flight is suspended or canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, and you've been notified in advance by the airline,” says Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO and Head of Direct Sales, Go Digit General Insurance.
If an airline cancels your flight, they will typically offer an alternative flight or refund your ticket. Many travel insurance policies also cover flight cancellations, allowing you to claim for extra expenses like non-refundable hotel bookings or other trip costs. If the airline doesn't provide a refund, your travel insurance may reimburse you for covered cancellations under the policy's terms. However, you cannot claim the same expense both from the airline and the insurance company.
When Flight Is Rescheduled
If your flight is rescheduled due to unforeseen weather conditions, causing you to extend your stay, opting for this coverage will reimburse you for the additional lodging costs incurred or difference in airfare up to the sum insured. “This covers scenarios like natural disasters, strikes or political disturbances, among others. This ensures that unexpected travel disruptions don't impact your overall trip experience,” says Chaturvedi.
Travel insurance can thus be a crucial safety net during disruptions like Cyclone Dana, covering expenses related to flight cancellations, delays, and unforeseen lodging costs. It helps mitigate financial stress and ensures smoother travel arrangements, allowing you to focus on safety rather than unexpected expenses.
