Reliance Jio has once again outpaced its closest competitor, Airtel, in the race to acquire Vodafone Idea's subscribers, indicates the latest subscriber data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for the month of May.
During May, Reliance Jio managed to add an impressive three million subscribers to its network, solidifying its position as the market leader. In contrast, Bharti Airtel added 1.3 million subscribers, trailing behind Jio's growth.
However, the news was not so positive for Vodafone Idea, as the struggling telecom operator faced a significant loss of 2.8 million subscribers during the same period, further shrinking its customer base.
At the end of May, Reliance Jio's total subscriber base reached an impressive 436.3 million, while Bharti Airtel's stood at 372.3 million. In contrast, Vodafone Idea's customer base dwindled to 230.9 million.
When it comes to market share, Reliance Jio's share of subscribers in May was 38.17 per cent, slightly up from 37.90 per cent in April. Airtel held a market share of 32.57 per cent in May, also showing a marginal increase from 32.45 per cent in April. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea continued to cede market share to its competitors, with its share dropping to 20.20 per cent in May from 20.45 per cent in April.
Looking at the active user base, Airtel managed to increase its active users to 100 per cent in May (from 99.81 per cent in April). Reliance Jio saw its active user base grow to 94.46 per cent in May (compared to 93.99 per cent in April). Vodafone Idea experienced a slight increase in active users, reaching 88.88 per cent in May, up from 88.57 per cent in April.
Despite the fierce competition among the telecom giants, the overall telecom user base saw minimal growth in May. The increase in wireless users was only 0.01 per cent, while wireline users experienced a slight decline of 0.07 per cent.
