The annual BW Businessworld B-school issue is much anticipated, much talked about. It becomes more relevant when the economy is finally looking up, the rating agencies are taking note of the Indian success story, and as has been evident on the ground, placements in premier B-schools are seeing skyrocketing salaries, after a hiatus.
A few trends are visible in the B-school ecosystem in the country.
First, is “consolidation”. Top B-schools have consolidated, expanded and done even better. The also-rans are finding it tough to survive, leave alone thrive.
Second is “internationalisation”. Top B-schools are increasingly getting global. They are sending students to global schools for exposure; getting international students; international faculty members and experts. Many of the schools are applying for global accreditations. Schools are also opening campuses abroad.
Third is “Industry 4.0”. B-schools are getting used to the new environment where artificial intelligence and machine learning are the buzzwords. Indeed, among the new schools, many are premised upon the Industry 4.0 foundation. This makes it easier for the students to land jobs, while making the task of head hunters all the more easier.
Fourth is “Diversity”. Gone are the days when top B-schools used to be the preserve of males. With girls taking to B-school education with a vengeance, the gender diversity ratio in top schools has improved dramatically, and is further set to improve, thereby laying the foundation for a just and egalitarian boardroom.
With these momentous changes, comes the shrinking space for government intervention. As Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar tells BW, he is keen that the IIM Bill is passed in the winter session, thereby enabling the top schools to take measures like appointing Directors.
It’s a new environment of empowerment. With empowerment comes responsibilities. It’s only hoped that our B-schools continue to produce leaders — not just in boardrooms.
