OpenAI opened its first Asia office in Tokyo and is aiming for business development in Japan, according to a media report on Monday.
This business progression was indicated by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, who expressed optimism for business in Japan. He stated that this venture would serve as a long-term partnership with Japanese individuals, government leaders, businesses, and research institutions.
Altman hinted at this business strategy last year when considering a Japan location after meeting Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. The startup has also opened offices in London and Dublin.
OpenAI’s new office in Tokyo is expected to support Japan in its AI ambitions as the country seeks to compete with an increasingly assertive China. The focus is on accelerating the shift to digital services and alleviating deepening labour shortages.
Recently, OpenAI made headlines for its collaboration with Microsoft on a data centre project, with an estimated cost of up to USD 100 billion. The initiative involves the development of an artificial intelligence supercomputer named "Stargate." The project is expected to be primarily financed by Microsoft, addressing the surging demand for AI data centres capable of handling more complex tasks than traditional counterparts.
