The Odisha government announced a Rs 2.65 lakh crore budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, representing a 15 per cent increase over last year’s allocation of Rs 2.30 lakh crore.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also serves as the finance minister, revealed the maiden budget of the BJP government, which served a strong commitment to agriculture and women's empowerment.
A major highlight of the budget is the allocation of Rs 33,919 crore for agriculture, a big 36 per cent increase from the previous year's funding. This allocation aims to enhance agricultural productivity and address irrigation challenges throughout the state.
The budget also sets aside Rs 1.55 lakh crore for programme expenditure and Rs 97,725 crore for administrative costs. In addition, Rs 3,900 crore has been designated for Disaster Risk Management Funds to bolster the state's disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
In alignment with the BJP’s election promises, the budget introduces the 'Subhadra' scheme, allocating Rs 10,000 crore to support women through financial assistance. The "Samrudha Krushak Yojana" for farmers has been granted Rs 5,000 crore, and a new initiative, 'CM Kisan,' has been allocated Rs 1,935 crore to further support the agricultural sector.
Majhi said that the budget was crafted with extensive stakeholder input, incorporating suggestions from 12,000 individuals.
The government has prioritised development across various sectors, including agriculture, industries, health, education, and services, with a focus on inclusive growth for farmers, women, youth, and the economically disadvantaged.
The chief minister reaffirmed the government's dedication to meeting the aspirations of Odisha’s residents and ensuring balanced development throughout the state.
