Bibek Debroy, a prominent economist and Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council (EAC-PM), passed away on Friday at the age of 69.
Recognized for his deep expertise in economic theory and policy, Debroy played a pivotal role in shaping critical economic strategies and reforms in recent years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled Debroy's death. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, "Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape."
"Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth," the PM said in X post.
As a trusted government advisor, Debroy offered invaluable insights on various macroeconomic issues, including fiscal policy, employment, and public sector management. His contributions were highly regarded both within India and internationally, where he was celebrated for his dedication to promoting economic growth and stability.
In addition to his economic contributions, Debroy was a prolific writer and an authority on Indian epics, enriching India’s cultural heritage with his translations and scholarly works.
