Microsoft has announced that it will be retiring its iconic Internet Explorer browser this week. Internet users will still be able to use legacy Internet Explorer-based websites on Microsoft Edge.
The company in its blog post said the future of internet explorer is in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft mentioned that its Edge browser was much faster, more secure and provided a more modern browsing experience than the Internet Explorer.
The Internet Explorer desktop application is being phased out for some versions of Windows 10 on June 15, 2022.
The browser reportedly reached its peak in 2003 with around 95% usage share. But with the release of new browsers from other competitors, its user base fell in the years that followed.
Those who have used computers at home, schools, and offices in the 1990s and early 2000s will have fond memories of Internet Explorer. For millions around the world, the browser served as the first gateway to the world wide web.
“We can’t thank everyone enough for supporting Internet Explorer over the years. Many people and organizations around the world have depended on IE to support them as they’ve learned, grown and conducted business online. Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode inherits this important responsibility, and we look forward to supporting you online with Microsoft Edge”, said Microsoft on its blog.
For web developers working on modern websites and apps, Internet Explorer had been very difficult especially. They will benefit greatly as the phase out will save them a lot of time and money.
