Malware attacks in India rose by 11 per cent in 2024, totalling 13,44,566 incidents compared to 12,13,528 in 2023, and ransomware attacks saw an even sharper increase, jumping by 22 per cent, according to the 2024 SonicWall mid-year cyber threat report.
The report highlighted a significant rise in internet of things (IoT) attacks, which surged by 59 per cent to 16,80,787 in 2024 from 10,57,320 the previous year. Notably, crypto attacks in India skyrocketed by 409 per cent.
SonicWall Vice President, APJ Sales, Debasish Mukherjee stated that the organisations today confront a dynamic threat landscape where threat actors continually innovate to outpace enterprise defences.
The report indicated that 12.6 per cent of an organisation’s annual revenues were at risk due to cyber threats, with businesses experiencing an average of 1,104 hours of critical attacks over 880 working hours. Cybersecurity measures helped protect businesses from a potential 46 days of downtime.
Additionally, the report identified 78,923 never-before-seen malware variants in the first five months of 2024, revealing that over 500 new strains were discovered daily. Globally, malware volume rose by 30 per cent in the first half of 2024, with a 92 per cent spike in May.
However, cryptojacking dropped by 60 per cent worldwide, except in India, where it continued to rise.
