Intel’s AI chips HL-328 and HL-388 are highly anticipated worldwide, the chips are expected to deliver advanced performance. However, China will be missing out on these latest chips to some extent, as the tech major plans to reduce the new chip capabilities for the Chinese market, to comply with US export controls and sanctions, according to a media report on Tuesday.
Intel said the two chips are scheduled for launch in June and September, respectively.
Meanwhile, the company’s China-specific AI chips will be based on its new version of chip 'Gaudi', which was unveiled recently in an attempt to challenge chip manufacturer Nvidia, which is currently dominating the GPU market.
Gaudi 3 is designed to boost on-chip memory, high-bandwidth memory and interface standards. However, to comply with the US export control regulations, the performance of the chips will be significantly reduced for China.
Nvidia is also gearing up to launch three China-specific chips after US compliance was tightened last year, capping the capabilities of AI chips. According to a report, the Intel rival is already ready with one batch of its H20 chips to be delivered in smaller quantities in the first quarter of 2024, with larger quantities expected from the second quarter.
