According to the report of Counterpoint Research, Samsung became the leading brand in the Indian smartphone market after two years with 32% YoY growth. It was also the fastest to recover, surpassing the pre-COVID levels in Q3 2020. On the other hand, Xiaomi slipped to the number two position for the first time since Q3 2018 with a 4% YoY decline.
OPPO shipments grew 30% YoY in Q3 2020, driven by the demand for its budget segment devices, the A12 and A11k, as well as a good performance of the recently launched A52, A53 2020 and F15 in the offline segment.
Moreover, realme grew 4% YoY in Q3 2020 as it was able to manage supply issues with increased production. It focused on the budget segment with multiple C-series launches to leverage the pent-up demand.
Additionally, Market ASP (average selling price) increased in the third quarter as the mid-tier segment (INR 10,000-INR 20,000) gained its highest ever shipments share.
Global Market Performance in Q3 2020
Counterpoint Research reveals that the Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has surpassed Apple for the first time and settled for third place in the global smartphone shipment market share in the third quarter of 2020. Xiaomi contributed 13 percent to total smartphone shipments and increased QoQ by 75 percent. Apple iPhone shipments declined 7 percent YoY during Q3 2020 and can be attributed to this year's delayed annual iPhone launch. Huawei finished second with a 14 per cent market share.
Overall, global smartphone shipments declined 4 percent, but QoQ increased 32 percent to 366 million units. However, South Korean giant, Samsung retained its top position with 80.4 million shipments, 48 per cent QoQ growth , and 3 percent YoY growth. This is clearly the highest shipment in the last three years for Samsung, the report added.
Interestingly, the Indian smartphone market grew by 9 Per cent and with 53 million units, it increased by 188 percent QoQ. Realme shipments grew 132 percent QoQ and it also became the world's fastest brand to hit 50 million shipments since inception. As far as feature phones are concerned, the segment saw a dip of 17 per cent globally. Transsion group retains its top position in the feature phone segment with more than 35 per cent market share.
