India is ranked 10th worldwide in cybercrime, which commonly involves scamming people by forcing them to make advanced payments, according to a global survey published in the journal PLoS ONE.
The survey was based on the 'World Cybercrime Index' ranking of almost 100 countries which revealed Russia at the top position, followed by Ukraine, China, the US, Nigeria and Romania.
North Korea stood at the seventh position, while the UK and Brazil were at the eighth and ninth positions respectively.
Further, among the top 10, the study categorised six countries according to their prevalent cybercrimes. India’s specialisation was found in scams.
Russia and Ukraine were identified as highly technical cybercrime hubs, whereas Nigeria engaged in less technical forms of cybercrime, the study added.
Romania and the US cybercriminals' expertise was in both high-tech and low-tech crimes, India in this category was reported to be a balanced, common in mid-tech crimes.
The research was carried out intensively for almost three years, which gave a deeper understanding of the several geographies of cybercrimes and their specialty in technical fraud.
