India’s developer community is experiencing unprecedented growth, with over 17 million developers now building on GitHub, making it the fastest-growing on the platform globally.
According to a GitHub report, developer numbers in India grew by 28 per cent this year, pointing to the country’s ascent as a major player in the tech landscape. Indian developers now rank second globally in several critical areas, including contributions to open-source projects, engagement with generative AI initiatives, and participation in GitHub Education.
This rapid expansion, coupled with India's strategic focus on AI and digital literacy, has fueled predictions that India will surpass the United States as the world’s largest developer community by 2028.
The report mentioned India’s increasing influence in generative AI, with Indian developers contributing to public AI projects at levels second only to the US. Contributions to these projects grew by an impressive 79 per cent this year, while year-over-year growth reached 95 per cent, placing India third globally after the US and Hong Kong (SAR).
"Our latest Octoverse report affirms that India's developer community is the fastest growing developer population on the planet. India's rise as a global tech titan is now inexorable," said GitHub CEO, Thomas Dohmke.
"Not only this, but India's booming developer community is using AI to build AI in record numbers, making it evermore likely that the next great multinational will come from India,” he added.
The growth of GitHub Education users in India has also been notable, largely due to the National Education Policy of 2020, which mandates AI and coding in the school curriculum. This policy has fostered a new wave of tech-savvy students and developers, preparing them to contribute to the country’s developer ecosystem.
