India's coal sector posted significant growth in October, with production rising 7.4 per cent year-over-year to 84.45 MT from 78.57 MT in October 2023, according to a report from the Coal Ministry. The growth underscores the sector's role in bolstering domestic energy security and supporting the nation's industrial needs.
A substantial increase in production was seen from captive mines and other independent coal producers, which contributed 16.59 MT in October, compared to 11.70 MT in the same month last year. This 41.88 per cent rise is attributed to higher output from private and joint venture projects aimed at bridging demand gaps in key industries.
Coal dispatches also surged, with a recorded volume of 82.89 MT, up from 79.25 MT in October 2023. This uptick indicates improved logistics and a consistent response to rising demand in sectors including power, steel, and cement.
"Coal dispatch from captive and other entities grew to 16.18 MT in October 2024, compared to 11.83 MT in October 2023, marking a 36.83 per cent increase," the ministry noted. This aligns with India's drive to expand supply sources and optimise dispatch systems, enabling timely coal delivery to regions and industries with high consumption needs.
In the fiscal year’s first seven months (April-October 2024-25), India’s cumulative coal production hit 537.45 MT, reflecting a 6.1 per cent growth over 506.56 MT during the same period in the previous year. This growth trajectory aligns with the government’s target of enhancing coal production to meet the growing demands of the Indian economy.
For the same April-October period, cumulative coal dispatches rose to 571.39 MT, up from 541.51 MT in the prior year. This increase reflects improvements in logistics and supply chain efficiency, which have been a primary focus for the Coal Ministry as it seeks to ensure an uninterrupted supply of coal to the country’s power and industrial sectors.
The Coal Ministry reiterated its commitment to maintaining a stable coal supply to meet India’s energy demands. "The Centre remains dedicated to ensuring reliable coal supply by increasing production, enhancing logistics, and supporting the country’s energy goals," the ministry stated. Efforts are underway to streamline operations, improve supply chain infrastructure, and expand captive and commercial mining projects to augment domestic output further.
